How to Stop Scrolling Reels: 5 Friction Tricks for Students

Team Maatram ·

Reels are built so you never have to decide to keep watching. The next one just starts. Fighting that with willpower alone is hard. A better move is adding a small pause at the exact moment you reach for the app. Here are five ways to do that, using tools we built at Maatram.

1. Put a wait at the door

Before you open the app, you need a moment to ask why you are opening it. Maatram's App Gate does this: opening a social app costs 10 points, and if you are in a Study Room, your roommates see the strike.

2. Lock it for a fixed block

Pick a block of focus time and make it hard to cancel. Start a Hard Lock and the apps stay locked until it ends. Hard Lock 2.0 for Android adds the lock screen and a home-screen widget with a live countdown.

3. Study with other people

Join a Study Room of up to five people, sync your focus timer, and see the moment someone opens a distracting app. Being seen is a strong brake.

4. Make progress visible

Start a Hard Lock and a sakura seed is planted. It grows while the lock runs. Every time you try a locked app, the tree drops a leaf. Finished locks plant trees in your garden, with your streak and total focus minutes.

5. Cover your laptop too

Maatram Hard Lock for Chrome blocks Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, X and Facebook during a Hard Lock, and the Stats page can include your laptop time.
